STOP WV SENATE BILL 805
Disingenuous Fake Clinics Funding Bill Cloaked as Abortion Pill Reversal
Senate Bill 805 is the wrong answer to West Virginia’s reproductive health crisis. At a time when hospitals are closing, ob-gyns are leaving the state and maternity deserts are growing, this bill props up pregnancy care organizations that are not regulated and offer neither health care nor client privacy.
Senate Bill 805 mentions a licensed health care professional, yet it is not clear what kind of licensed health care professional is implied since pregnancy care centers are not medical or even health care organizations, but rather advocacy organizations not bound by HIPPA or any regulating body.
Abortion Reversal Theories Are Unsafe and Not Based in Reality
Laws that require medically inaccurate information be provided about medication abortion are simply dangerous and wrong. Proponents indicate that it is possible to reverse the abortion procedure and continue the pregnancy if they change their mind after taking the initial mifepristone pill by taking progesterone.
According to a peer reviewed study found in the February 2023 edition of the American Journal of Public Health: “[Abortion] reversal laws continue a dangerous precedent of using unsound science to justify laws regulating abortion access, intrude upon the patient‒provider relationship, and may negatively affect the emotional and physical health of patients seeking a medication abortion. (Am J Public Health. 2023;113(2):202–212. https://doi.org/10.2105/AJPH.2022.307140)
So-called research on reversing medication abortion shows that this is a refuted theory based on the anecdotal experiences of physicians who were willing to do experimental treatment on pregnant women, without the usual research safeguards to protect health and safety.
The state should not be pushing junk science in legislation that denies the best standard of care to those seeking health services.
The decisions of whether to choose adoption, seek abortion or become a parent are important and people should be given all of the information and support that they need.
